Shake well with Cracked ice:
2oz. Basil Hayden's (Canadian whiskeys will work well also. I do not favor rye {as Esquire says}, and most Bourbons ARE too sweet for this one. So a fine Whiskey with rye in it, I say.)
1 cap-full ('bout an ounce) dry French vermouth (not sweet vermouth - yeesh, with whiskey and fruit!)
2 dashes Angostura bitters (very important. Skipping this is like leaving the basil outta pesto.)
Strain into chilled cocktail glass and garnish with an orange slice. (Not just a twist - the squirt of sweet orange juice balances the dry vermouth, spicy whiskey and dash o' bitters just right.
